Subject: Re: [Re: COLLECTING TYPICAL GAMBIAN NAMES]

Dear G-Lers,

Sister Jaboh is right this is getting exciting, lot of beautifull names. How
ever without involving in any polemic with Momodou Njie just to make clear
that I believed that there are typical(indigenous) Gambina names and that
Fatou,Momodou,John ,Mary are not indigenous but common Gambian names. This is
just common sense and I believed that taking care of these typical
Gambian(Senegambian,to that extend African )names is very important. There
are
nations who are concious of this,in Norway there is a law guiding naming
giving .I have never said that people must give their children African
names, offcourse every individual must take that decision.
I did agree with Sainabou that there are certain names that have other
origins
but are simplify (or what to say Africanise)like Nabou. We would find out
also
that certain names Like Karankallo,Karanlang(a knowledgeable,Learned person)
are titles. Kebba,Maudow are also titles. We wolud also find out that names
like Nato(Mums namesake),Fatoma(Dads namesake)originated from the believed
that it will disrespect for our parents to call their namesakes by their
real
names..In wollof you have Ndey(meaning Mum).Ba Saikou,Saikou Ba is also
meant
to solve such problems.
There are so many things coming out of this here and this is convincing, we
must not let it go,these beautiful names must be taken care of.I only hope
that more will be coming.By the way is Kabir indigenousw?
Momodou Camara when the list is completed you must have it in your
web-side.
NB; we can do this a collective assignment by discussing the meaning or
origin
of some of these names. If people have suggestions of how this could be done
better I will very much appreciate it.Come on Bros and Sisters !

For Freedom

Saiks

I will join Mafy by adding my own name to this:

Ndey

The Struggle Continues!!!
Ndey Jobarteh

>>>Hi Everyone,
>>>
>>>I share Saik's interest in names, and have made that clear before. The
>>>question, 'What's in a name?' is as controversial now as it was many
>>>centuries ago. I don't know what sort of research Saiks wants to do, but
>>>there are loads of material around that he can make use of. I was

>>>originated from other places. So it is quite an interesting subject.
>>>
>>>Having said that, I am not sure what a 'typical' Gambian name is. As far
as

>>>So
>>>also are Fatou and Momodou. Any research that fails to take these names

>>>'typical' Gambian names actually originated. It's a difficult task, and I
>>>wish him well. I am also offering to participate in this study in

>>>
>>>Finally, I am not sure what can be done about the names parents give to

>>>
>>>Momodou
>>>
>>>PS I'm not sure whether Jabou added the following to her list : Nyanya,
>>>Kojo, Hoyan, Njuga, Anna, Yassin, Oseh, Ebu, Bola, Abioseh, Tunde etc I
am
>>>not suggesting that these are 'typical' Gambian names, but are names that
