New Peace Corps Director for The Gambia

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 27, 2003 -- Today, the Peace Corps swore in
six new Country Directors in a ceremony held at the Paul D. Coverdell
Peace Corps Headquarters. The new Directors will be going to countries
in the three Peace Corps regions of Africa, Europe, the Mediterranean
and Asia, Inter-America and the Pacific.

Africa Region
The Gambia
Dr. Diana Sloan spent two years with Peace Corps as a rural public
health Volunteer in India. She brings with her a great deal of
experience and knowledge in the areas of education and health. Her
professional career experiences includes: Executive Dean at Antioch
University Santa Barbara, Vice Chancellor of Education and Technology at
Los Rios Community College, Vice President of Academic and Student
Services at Lake Michigan College, Dean of Academic Affairs, Assistant
Director of the Associate Degree Nursing Program and Nursing Professor
at Santa Barbara City College, Teacher Corps in Wisconsin, and Public
Health Nurse. Sloan earned a Nursing degree from the University of
Connecticut, a Master's degree in Urban Education at the University of
Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University
of Texas at Austin. She enjoys running, hiking, gardening, and watching
foreign films.

Youssou Ndour in New York City in April

Just announced! 3rd annual Afropop Hall of Fame pre-concert benefit
dinner will be in New York City on April 12th. Honorees this year
are Youssou N'Dour & Super Etoile and the Rockefeller Foundation.

highly anticipated, annual Great African Ball where Youssou and his
band will delight the Senegalese and Afropop lovers crowd from 11 pm

West African Films Dominate Africa Fest

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) - Films from the West African nations of
Mauritania, Mali and Senegal took top honors Saturday at the 18th Panafrican
Film and Television Festival.

The festival, know locally as ``Africa's Cannes'' screened more than 100
films after opening in this desert capital on Feb. 22.

Abderrahmane Sissako of Mauritania won first prize for ``Hermakono,'' a film
about a young man who becomes stranded in a village on the edge of the
Sahara Desert as he tries to make his way to Europe.

``Kabala,'' by Malian filmmaker Assane Kouyate, and ``L'Afrance,'' by
Senegal's Alain Gomis won the other top prizes.

The festival, which features the work of African actors and filmmakers,
began in 1969 and is held every two years.

It is considered the most prestigious film festival on the continent, and
attracts thousands of people from all over the world.
