Phew!
Our resident APRC Jaliba survived three sacking attempts. Imagine living in
the constant fear of being sacked. But as Dr. Saidy espoused earlier this
'constant fear of the axe' syndrome is akin to battered women's syndrome.

Well, Monsieur Le Directeur can keep on begging, since those of us that work
hard in life and deserve our positions NEVER have to live and cower in the
fear of being axed by a ruthless master.

As my Nigerian friend's would say:
"Water Don Pass Garri".

Tombong Saidy finally sacked Bora Mboge takes over President Jammeh’s “broom”
has swept through GRTS with Tombong Saidy as its latest casualty. Mr. Saidy
was sacked last Friday after surviving three attempts to fire him as director
general of The Gambia Radio and Television Services. Mr. Saidy had received
three letters of termination that were rescinded shortly afterwards. However,
this latest termination is for good, since Bora Mboge has been confirmed as
his successor to the post of director general. Mr. Mboge who was hitherto the
director of programmes of the GRTS has already received a letter of
appointment to that effect. In a telephone interview with The Independent Mr.
Mboge confirmed his appointment, saying he has “humbly accepted” the post. “
It is a challenge in life which I am ready to take up,” Mboge pointed out,
adding, “it is a mark of trust and confidence placed in me”. The Independent
had also learnt that Mr. Saidy’s letter of termination, which was
hand-delivered to him by a police escort from the Department of State for
Works and Communication, outlined no reason for the action. His sacking
follows similar orders barely three weeks ago for him to quit office. He was
reinstated a week later after Vice President Isatou Njie-Saidy and Bora Mboge
programme manager at the GRTS personally interceded on his behalf. The former
GRTS boss had also received two other termination letters within a
twenty-four hour period, which were later withdrawn without any explanation.
Inside sources at the station link his sacking to the highly publicised but
controversial Pajero raffle, which was never held, generating outrage from
members of the public who had “invested” money to take part in the event.
They felt cheated after their monies were never refunded. Until his
appointment as director general of the GRTS Mr. Saidy was Gambia’s ambassador
to the United States until he was declared persona non grata as a result of
complications in his domestic life, which included physical assaults and
battery. He was later appointed deputy permanent secretary at the Office of
the President and later transferred as deputy permanent secretary at the
Department of Trade and Employment. Bora Mboge the new boss at the GRTS is a
veteran broadcaster. He spent a long stint at Radio Gambia but later crossed
over to the television wing following its founding in 1996.Born in the 1950s
Bora was an announcer at Radio Gambia but soon rose to senior announcer and
producer. He was also the head of drama presentation and light entertainment,
documentaries, features and sport. He bagged a diploma in Mass Communications
at the University of Cairo and a Masters in Journalism at the University of
Cardiff in Wales. He was redeployed to the GRTS in 1995 where he headed the
news and current affairs section before his appointment as manager of TV
programmes.
