Thanks for this news briefing.

Does this mean that Ndey Tapha Sosseh has been replaced??? I was made to believe that Ndey Tapha is still the Editor in Chief..

Observer gets new editor

Momodou Sanyang
Momodou Sanyang, associate consultant with Management Development
Consultants International, has been appointed editor-in-chief of the Daily
Observer newspaper with effect from Tuesday, January 11. He replaces Ndey
Tapha Sosseh.

Sanyang attended Sukuta Primary School, Armitage High School and then St
Augustine’s High School. He enrolled in the School of Public Health, where
he graduated as a public health inspector and served at various health posts
country wide.

Mr Sanyang left for the former USSR in 1975 to pursue a masters degree in
international relations at Kiev State University, Ukraine. He returned to
the country in 1979, and taught Literature, English and Government at St
Augustine’s Junior Secondary School before joining Action Aid-The Gambia in
1986.

At Action Aid, Sanyang served in the Donor- Liaison Unit, Research
Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, Development and Communication Unit

In 1995 he resigned on health grounds but subsequently secured a job at the
Village Savings and Credit Association, VISACA, as monitoring and evaluation
officer.
At the end of that contract, Sanyang went into consultancy until his new
appointment at the Daily Observer.
Asked to comment on his new job in relation to the impartiality of the Daily
Observer’s editorial line, Sanyang said: “I know that the press should be
independent, objective and neutral. These principles I want to uphold. I
will not throw spanners in the wheel of press freedom. If the paper was
being viewed as objective, I will work to consolidate and improve on that.
This is my intention.”

On whether he had any media experience the new Daily Observer editor said:
“If you look at my work experience at Action Aid, the job of a development
liaison officer is to prepare project proposals for funding. This entailed
not only preparing project, but receiving progress report from various
project managers for onwards transmission to donors. This entailed editing
and verification of reports.
“Additionally at Action Aid, we had a publication team that publishes a
development newspaper called Yiriwa Kibaroo. I was an editor and secretary
to this newspaper. I also received in-house-training in news writing and
editing.”
