Gna Denies Shootings At Captain Singhateh's Residence

Lt Lamin Gano Gambia National Army's Public Relations Officer has denied reports
of a shooting incident last Saturday near the residence of the Secretary of
State for Works, Communication and Information Captain Edward Singhateh.
Reports from within military circles had alleged that some shooting took place
around Captain Singhateh's residence around 6 am on Saturday after unknown
persons allegedly attempted to invade his premises. The reports disclosed that
the guards on duty promptly engaged the alleged assailants, resulting in a
sustained exchange of gunfire. It reportedly resulted in some casualties.
The reports claimed that the assailants reportedly escaped and are still
believed to be at large while the security forces are said to be combing the
area with a view to apprehending them. Residents around the area also indicated
that they heard sporadic gun shots during the early hours of Saturday near
Captain Singhateh's residence. According to them it lasted for thirty minutes.
Some of them also claimed that the shooting 'abruptly ceased' but later resumed
for half an hour.
One of them, who said he lives not far away from Captain Singhateh's residence
said that he heard the shooting as he was preparing to go to the mosque for the
morning prayers. 'At first I did not know where it was coming from, followed by
a huge noise, leaving everybody terribly scared,' he added. However when
contacted for comments, Lt Gano stressed that there was no such shooting around
the area, noting that the noise may have been caused by thunder accompanying the
heavy rains. He said that after 'personally' contacting his men on the ground he
found out that 'there was no such thing as a shooting.' He indicated that such
events are normally reported at their units therefore he insisted that no such
shooting took place personally contacted my men to find out the truth and no
such thing occurred there,' he maintained.
