Rainstorm kills 2 in Basse

At least two people were killed when heavy storms hit Basse Monday night. The storm which struck the town at night also destroyed several houses leaving hundreds of inhabitants homeless.

Among the two female students who died was Bailemeh Conteh from Alunhari. The other victim whose name is yet to be established came from Changally Lankaddy village, near Basse. Three other people were hospitalised at Bansang hospital, among them another student Madusu Conteh, sister of one of the dead girls.

According to our reporter who visited the scene, the gale which started at 9 pm and lasted for several hours affected seven other villages- Alunhari, Basse, Kobakunda, Manneh Kunda, Sangali, Kundam and Santa -Su. Among the houses damaged in Koba Kunda was a ten classroom block.
The local authorities could not comment on the level of damage caused by the storm as they were busy with relief work.
