Gambia leader removes police chief, navy commander, others



APA-Banjul (The Gambia) Gambian president Yahya Jammeh has embarked on
a big shake up of the security forces with the removal on Tuesday of
six senior army and police officers, including the Commander of the
Gambia Navy and the Inspector General of Police, Rear Admiral Sarjo
Fofana and Ensa Badjie respectively.

This comes less than 24 hours after the removal of the Deputy Chief of
Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, Major General Yankuba Drammeh.

As usual, there were no official reasons given for these high profile removals.

Also late last year, the Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Lang
Tombong Tamba and several other senior police and military officials
were removed, and since then, General Tamba and some of his colleagues
are in detention, even though they have still not been taken to court
or charged with any offence.

Meanwhile, according to a press release issuded here Tuesday by the
government, President Jammeh also appointed the former Police Crime
Management Coordinator Yankuba Sonko as new Inspector General of
Police and Lieutenant Colonel Sillah Kujabbi has been appointed as
acting Navy Commander.
