Just been reading the book: The Gambia Colony- An official Handbook by
Francis Bisset Archer.

"In 1807 Great Britain formed the settlement of the Gambia which was subject
to and controlled by the government of Sierra Leone, and ultimately annexed
to that colony by Act of the Parliament in 1821.

On the Island of Goree being ceded back to the French, it was the intention
to repair James Fort, but this period - 1814- the fort was found to be in so
shattered a condition that it was deemed advisable to remove the seat of
government and to form a new settlement, which was ultimately established at
the Island of Banjole (Bathurst)."
...

"The most important exports from the colony between October 1837 and
September, 1938 were: - Cotton, 26 tons; ivory, 13 tons; hides 99,209; wax
258 tons; ground-nuts 671 tons. The revenue for the year ending March, 1839
was 6,780 pounds and expenditure 6,633 pounds."
