Gabriel J Roberts, the chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC), has said that Gambians abroad will be allowed to vote from their
countries of residence if the IEC is able to access the necessary funds.

Speaking to the Daily Observer, at his office yesterday, Mr Roberts said the
government had been considering the IEC’s proposal since December 27.

“The government has given the IEC the green light to carry out some
feasibility studies together with the departments of state for Foreign
Affairs, and Finance and Economic Affairs with a view to organising a
donor’s conference to work out modalities for acquiring the funds,” he said.
“We will prepare and table a funding document to the donors on how to
conduct the forthcoming presidential, parliamentary and local government
elections which are due in 2006 and 2008,” he said.
The IEC chairman also revealed that they would conduct its supplementary
registration of voters before the 2006 general elections.

Chairman Roberts earlier mentioned that all elections conducted by the IEC
were observed by the national and international human rights groups,
representatives of the UN and local diplomatic missions, adding that the IEC
had been invited to observe elections outside The Gambia on a number of
occasions.
