ENTERTAINMENT NEWS Yusupha Ngum Son of Mbalax Star Musa Ngum Hits the Charts By Pa Njie

---------------------------------

January 5, 2005
The son of Gambian Mbalax ambassador Musa Ngum is following in the footsteps of his father as he takes on the Mbalax scene with his debut album, entitled "Ndigel". The younster Ngum who admitted his musical career is inspired by his dad's success story as a musical ambassador for the Gambia, is aspiring to take it a step further beyond the limitations of his dad.

Q: Who is joloffman?

A: My real name is Yusupha Ngum, son of Musa Ngum who is a well-known Mbalax star both in the Gambia and Senegal. Joloffman (SeneGambian man) is my artist name.

Q: You started your music career as a rap artist with the rap group Galaxy Crew but now gone solo and playing mbalax. How did your fans react to this?

A: (laughs) They were surprised in the beginning but because they believe in me they are still supportive of me. I would say most are happy and trust I could do mbalax.

Q: Your debut mbalax album entitled 'Ndigel' which is available on audio cassette is doing well locally. Will this be released on cd for the international market?

A: Releasing on cd is kind of expensive, so I am still looking for a wider market to do cd. It is my hope to reach out to the international market with the right help.

Q: Your father is a well-known mbalax star both locally and internationally. Do you think you can be as big as him?

A: (laughs) He is my inspiration and mentor. I believe if I am given respect and support in the music industry it is mostly thanks to him. It is his wish to see me reach the heights he has reached because he used to tell me "Yus, if I had the chance you have people will see something different from what I gave them". My wish is to be better though (laughs). I love and respect him because from hard times he single-handedly took Gambian music to a wider audience.

Q: What in your opinion needs to be changed or improved upon for our music to gain popularity internationally?

A: I have just one word: EXPOSURE!! I believe Gambian music is too confined to us. We would have seen brighter lights with a little bit more exposure from promoters.

Q: We have musicians playing everything from our traditional music, mbalax, reggae, dancehall, Hip-Hop etc but very few known female musicians. Do you think we will see more female musicians anytime soon?

A: I think there is a lot of female talent…mind you; I'm talking from first hand experience. What they really need is encouragement. Female artists have been too suppressed or not taken seriously for them to open up from their budding stage

Q: Any words to Gambian djs, music promoters abroad i.e outside The Gambia?

A: Yeah, we appreciate their efforts and all, but I personally believe they are not going out to their full potential. I have a lot of faith in the djs and promoters out there; they just have to have that believe in themselves. In art, don't be content with what you have, experiment, innovate, the sky is the limit.

Q: Thank you for the interview and look forward to hearing more of you.

A: Thank you brother man, jaama ak xewell
