Mr. Camara,
Statements made on Gambian statistics, particularly when it comes to natural
resources, should never be trusted. The reasons being that, the only unit
charged with the regular updating of some agricultural statistics, the
Department of Planning, under DoSA, is, like many other units, grossly
underfunded, and lacks the basic resources necessary to carry out such a
task.
You see, one of the most urgent needs of our country is reliable statistics.
Without this, meaningful planning is impaired. Probably, the state of our
economy today can be attributed to the lack of reliable statistics on ALL
of our nations resources, be they physical, biological or even human!
So whether the statistics say 120 km2 or 20 km2, don't rely too much on the
accuracy.

Folks,
I was just updating a page on Gambia when I saw that the irrigated land has
declined from 120 sq km (1989 est.) to 20 sq km (1998 est.).
Could this be an error or is it the reality? Can some of our agric sientists
or anyone with knowledge on the subject shed some light as to why this
decline in irrigated land.
