Folks,

I still doubt whether Kebba Foon authored that posting. If he did, he would have negated all what he had stood for as a founding member of STGDP. Although his opinion may be personal, it would still not reflect well on someone who has been credited, along with a few other people, for bringing the Opposition at the same table.

Somebody said that Kebba Foon is not a Wollof, but a Serer. In the spirit of sanakuya or kal, I’d therefore urge Kebba to make peace with the Serer deity, Ngorr Sene, and repent for the outrageous statements he made today. On the other hand, if Ngorr may have been tempted to take a joint and is dozing off, I will refer you to the Fulani deity on the foothills of Macina, the same that saw the routing of the Bambara from Segu and the Nyanchos from Kansalla. Yet still if that does not work, I’m sure I can have a Jola cousin from somewhere in Kanilai pour libation of ndamsan at the feet of the African god to calm down the flaring tempers.

At this juncture, the last thing we need is intra-fighting within the Opposition. Regardless of the anger, I think the positive thing we can deduce from these debates is that the Gambian has evolved from being a mere spectator of national politics to a full time player. I remember how in those days most of us went underground with outlawed organizations such as MOJA and BALANGBA to discuss about and strategize on The Gambia’s political future. Literature critical of the government was either published anonymously in newspaper columns (e.g. The Nation’s As I See It by Jamanka) or by underground pamphlets such as Voice of the Future. The majority of the people moved on with their lives as if time had stopped for them just like the big clock at The Quadrangle.

The truth is almost all our ethnic groups have some form of derogatory, subtle references of other people. Certain Fulani refer to other ethnic groups as ‘haddo bhaleeri’ or ‘yimbhe bhaleebhe’ (those who use black clothes or black people). In Senegal for instance, the Wollof refer to the non-Wollof as laka kat (speaker of another tongue) or ‘nyak (bushman). The same goes for the Mandinka who sometimes add the diminutive suffix –nding (little or insignificant one) in referring to a non-Mandinka. All this however disappears in the face of sanakuya, inter-marriages, friendships and other bonds.

Personally, I do not believe that the UDP or Darboe is tribalist. The tag just does not fit. One has to look at the ethnic composition of the party’s executive committee and their support base to negate any assertions of ethnicism associated with the UDP.

It is indisputable that some of us support our parties because of ethnic or family affiliation with the party leader. However, a party’s greatness lies, inter alia, in its ability to rise above such associations.

Just as our religious differences have never torn our society apart, our ethnic and political differences should not bring us down.

  Momodou.

Amat and all, I understand your surprise and outrage. However, there is no
damage to the STGDP and the STGDP has nothing to do with those comments, as
an organization. We have come out and stated that Kebba was speaking for
Kebba and not STGDP. Thus, I see no damage to repair. Yes, Kebba is a
member and we will address that in a meeting with the group, just like we
have done tens of other times. I just want to assure folks that the STGDP
is an organization of integrity and will continue to be so.

Chi Jaama

Joe
