Mandela to visit US for two weeks
JOHANNESBURG, May 8 (AFP) - South African former president Nelson Mandela
was to leave for the United States on Monday for a two-week visit which may
include a meeting with President Bill Clinton, his office said.
Mandela’s first stop in the United States will be in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana, on Tuesday for the launch of the Nelson Mandela School of Public
Policy and Urban Affairs, the office said in a statement.
Later in the day, Mandela will be awarded two honorary degrees, one from
Southern University and the other from the Louisiana State University.
Mandela is due in New York on Monday next week to address the Jewish
Community Relations Council and International House, a tertiary institution.
His office said Mandela was hoping to pay a courtesy call on President
Clinton in Washington next week Tuesday, but the White House had not yet
confirmed a time for the meeting.
According to the statement, Mandela wants to brief Clinton on the Burundi
peace process, which the 81-year-old statesman is mediating, and
particularly on his recent visit to the Burundian capital Bujumbura.
On May 18 Mandela will address the American Jewish Committee, after which
he will be decorated with the committee’s American Liberties Medallion, his
office said.
Mandela is expected back in South Africa on May 19.
