The story of ZoneTwo 2001 would go down as the saddest even though The
Scorpions recorded the furthest journey in the tourney in recent
history.Having arrived at the final after beating Mali the Scorpions raised
the hopes of all Gambians to the firm believe that their finest hour might
have arrived at long last. There was heightened expectation in the country
with every Radio and papers blasting out the story and focussing the nation
on the match. What is more the match was broad cast live on Gambian
television which was hooked to the Malian TV all evevening.By 6.00pm Sunday,
most of the streets in the Greater Banjul Area were empty as people sit
tight up in front of TV screens.THe Match got off to a slow start for the
Gambia and clearly The Lions were better in ball control.Howeve,r the
Scorpions held up till late in the game 43rd to be exact when Keeper
Mustapha Minteh entangled Senegal's Marauding attacker Ndoye for a
penalty. The Lions made no mistake with the spot kick and were 1-0 up
beforte the break.THe Gabian gave received some more fire on resuption
with Athur Gomezand Ebou Sillah coming very close a few occassions. The
latter was clearly tripped twice in the Senagalese but the Cape Veadean
referee was not impressed and kept the game going. But the boys hardly
recovered from the first have demoralising goal and perhaps the eternal
psychological inferiority to Seneagal took its toll on them.Within minutes
the Lions scored another...and another before Gambia pull up a consolation
through Bai Omar Samba.Final Score Gambia 1 Senegal 3
