INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION SEEKS ENVIRONMENTAL/SOCIAL ACTIVIST TO WORK
ON AFRICA REGION

The Bank Information Center is a non-governmental organization working
to support the efforts of citizens in developing countries to influence
the projects and policies of the Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs),
such as the World Bank Group. BIC provides information that enables NGOs
to address the social and environmental impacts of MDB lending.  BIC
also works towards democratizing the international financial
institutions by promoting reforms that foster information disclosure,
citizen participation, and public accountability. The Bank Information
Center is seeking to hire an Africa Project Coordinator to join our
team.

BIC's Africa Program will support African organizations that are working
to defend the rights of communities and the integrity of local
ecosystems within the context of World Bank -financed infrastructure and
extractive industry projects. The Africa Program also provides timely
information regarding new and potentially controversial projects and
responds to requests for information about World Bank Group operations.

The Africa Project Coordinator will focus on gathering and providing
information related to the work of the World Bank Group in Africa.
Amongst other things, this will include: outreach activities directed at
organizations, journalists and individuals working on environmental,
human rights and economic justice issues; responding to requests for
information from African and international organizations; and drafting
and disseminating information on potentially problematic World Bank
Group projects and policies. The Africa Project Coordinator will also
assist the African Program Manager in carrying out research and advocacy
related to problematic projects and policies on the continent.

Preferred qualifications include: an undergraduate degree; an
understanding of historical and contemporary political-economic issues
in Africa, including the role of the international financial
institutions; work experience in Africa or on Africa-related issues,
including a familiarity with human rights and environmental issues on
the continent; an ability to communicate with individuals from diverse
cultural, educational and professional backgrounds; a strong commitment
to social change; strong analytical and writing skills; English
proficiency is a must, French proficiency is highly desirable and
Portuguese or Kiswahili proficiency is also a plus; computer skills,
including basic understanding of "html" and experience developing
databases; ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize well under
time pressure; ability to follow through on tasks, strong attention to
detail; good sense of humor and flexibility; and willingness to travel.

The Africa Project Coordinator assists and is supervised by the Africa
Program Manager. The salary range will be in the low to mid 30s.
