Hello All,

Jammeh's claim for healing powers is not new, since his days at the
Military Police in Fajara Barracks, Yaya claimed he could fix broken
limbs and other illnesses, hence his 'Kanilia' nickname, apart from
the fact that he comes from Kanilia. There was another 'Kanilia'
working at the prisons in the early eighties an late nineties, who
used to claim fixing limbs, too, and he was named after that Kanilia.
Yaya Jammeh was rumoured to keep idols and was often seen drying
statues under the sun at Fajara Barracks. He was only converted after
his illegal takeover, allegedly by the late Warrant Officer Alpha Bah,
whom he killed with the other four alleged coup plotters last year. WO
2 Bah brought Imam Fatty, a neighbour of his in Manjai Kunda to the
state house and he also allegedly persuaded Jammeh to convert to Islam
to win votes. Now he is claiming healing powers from the Quran, just
before national assembly elections.

Joe et al,
Perhaps this is the grand design of Yaya's advisers to effect a
deviation away from the real issues in the build up to The 2007
National Assembly elections. But it is public knowledge that Yaya
takes advice from nobody and therefore he cannot have the comfort of
apportioning blame to others for his "unpresidential" mannerisms.
There are numerous important national issues which require his
attention at the moment. His time would be better spent by belabouring
those issues rather than treking to The Royal Victoria Teaching
Hospital(RVTH) and posing a distraction there on daily basis.
It should be stated that the RVTH is a public institution and patients
are taken there to receive treatment from profesionals. It would be
highly irresponsible on the side of those profesionals to allow
president Jammeh to use on those patients a so-called method of
treatment the safety of which has not been proven medically.
What do we know about Yaya Jammeh the traditional medicine man before
he became president? The answere is zero. I understand he did not
proceed beyond the fifth form at Gambia High school. Let us assume
that he studied the sciences in high school, then it becomes necessary
to ask the question : Can high school science make one an authority in
modern medicine? The answere is an emphatic no. Finally, what do we
know about Yaya Jammeh's interests in Islam and The Quran before he
became president. The answere is absolutely nothing!
Jammeh and his surrogates would have us believe that he is an expert
in the above three areas and many more. They are streneously
endeavouring to build his image as bigger than ordinary and thus give
Gambians some sorts of objective reasons to embrace the dictator. This
is because any comparison of Jammeh's credentials with those of his
political opponents will show him to have been the least qualified
candidate at all the elections he is said to have won. A study of
Jammeh's performance on the Job, and attitude towards superiors and
peers before July 22nd 1994, should make interesting revelations.
What we are seeing in The Gambia now had previously been manifested by
other dictatorships in Africa. There is no limit
to the tomfoolery our dictators can display. I very earnestly hope and
pray, that Jammeh would not go to the Surgical ward and attempt to
perform surgery on some helpless patient.
Omar Joof.
