Hi All,

My own comrade-in-arts Ismaila Fatty resident in Stockholm since 1988 has been given the rare opportunity to exhibit his works at the Culture House (Kultur Huset) in Stockholm. The exhibition continues till February 16 at the foyer sections of the second and third floors.

Ismaila is an accomplished batik artist who for many years developed this age old Gambian tradition into producing scuptural forms of abstract and expressive images by using colours and starch.
While batik production in Gambia is "industrialised" to cater for the a cheap souvenir market, Ismaila's work effortlessly crosses and blends the domains of painting, textile arts, and sculpture.
The Culture House in Stockholm is one of the most prestigious institutions in Sweden and for the first time ( as far as I know) it is, through the work of Ismaila Fatty, celebrating this aspect of Gambian culture.

For more information, point your browser to :

http://www.kulturhuset.stockholm.se/

or for the English language link:

http://www.kulturhuset.stockholm.se/english/default.asp

and click on Kara Bulo. Unfortunately the english language link is not quite as informative as one should hope for an international audience.

At another exhibiton, precisely at the Museem of Natural History, there is a current exhibition of fish findings that were products of a Swedish expedition to the Gambia in 1931 and 1950. At the page below you can't miss the links to the Expeditions to Gambia under Fish (department of vertebrate zoology). You can read about this expedition and the exhibition at the ichthyology section of the museem:

http://www.nrm.se/djur.html.en

The museem is linked to the department of zoology at the university of Stockholm, so its english language sites are just as excellent. (There are interesting links to collection sites in Gambia that show creeks around Koli Kunda, Sankoli Kunda and Faraba as the origin of the fish species shown).

Late new year greetings to all of you.

Cheers,
Momodou S Sidibeh
