Subject: Shipment of Books to the University of the Gambia

Dear Ladies and gentlement:

For the past year, (TFWA) the Foundation for West Africa (I am both the Vice President and Acting Secretary) has been making arrangements to facilitate the donation of books to the University of the Gambia. This needed a number of transactions and arrangements requiring developing partnerships and collaborations with differennt institutions and agencies both here in the US and on the ground in the Gambia. As a result earlier this year, Mr. Topher Hamblet, the President of TFWA visited the Gambia to connect with officials at the Medical School and faculty from other departments of the University. More critically he also finalized an arrangement with the Gambia Womens Finance Association (a non profit organization) to act as the pass through organization for the donations. On this side we developed relations with the Sabre Foundation who represent book publishers all over the wall and act as their book donation agent to Third world countries.

Working with officials and faculty (particularly Professor Tina Jonsyn and Dr. Ousman Nyan Heads of the department of Biological Sciences and Agriculture and the Medical School respectively) from all departments of the University of the Gambia and with Sabre Foundation, the University has identified the books they need and we are poised to send a 40 foot container of books currently being estimated at close to a million dollars, plus or minus. Our target date for the shipment is mid December, so that the books will arrive in the Gambia for the start of next semester. However, we are looking to raise money for the cost of shipping the container and it offers an opportunity for the particippation of the Gambian community.

You are therefore being invited to a special meeting to get more information about the project, and to seek your ideas and support to develop some strategies for raising some money for the preparartion and shipment of the books. We hope to engage the Gambian community even beyond Rhode Island to not only participate in this important effort, but perhaps take ownership of it as a continuous project in the future. You represent a select few of people we are inviting to this meeting, because we beleive your ideas and resourcefulness will help us to make this project successful.

The meeting will be held next SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH 2006, FROM 1:30-3:00PM. IT WILL BE HELD AT MY OFFICE, 150 COLFAX STREET PROVIDENCE, RI 02905. MY PHONE THERE IS 490-2774 IN CASE YOU MISS THE PLACE. IT IS BEHIND THE CVS ON BROAD STREET.
I am counting on all of you and hope you can make it. My friend and colleague Topher will also attend the meeting. If you know someone you think will make some useful contributions to the discussions, please feel free to invite him or her. Thanks.
Lamin Sarr
PS: Please see attached campaign flyer for the fund raising effort. Your opinion is welcome. It is yet to be finaalizzed. Thanks.
