Is Gambia Without Trained Or Skilled Workers

Many are going about saying that Gambian youths hate vocational training
skills and that the country lacks trained human resources.

This is a farce. VTC, GTTI, the old PWD, the dock yard and many enterprises
had trained Gambians over the years to be hard working technicians. Many
companies like GPMB, Gambia Ports Authority, GUC and other companies have
been operated by skilled personnel for many years. Many projects such as
the sewerage system, the feeder roads were constructed by Gambian skilled
personnel. It is therefore an insult to say that Gambian skilled personnel
are lazy and do not want to work.

What is happening in many places is that contractors come with their own
personnel and employ few Gambians. They pay them smaller wages and
allowances.

The Government officials should stop the accusations. Let them call all
Gambian technicians to a rally at the Stadium. They will have thousands to
fill it. What Gambian technicians need are jobs that enable them earn
enough to live on. They should not be used as scapegoats of the country's
economic problems.
