Published YDE Lists Very Authentic Editors

Make Will-Or-Woe Insistence Over Veracity of Listings


The Independent has reproduced what its editors call the full, faultlessly
true, comprehensive and unadulterated listing of over 200 people who owed
the Youth Development Enterprise, as at July-August 2003.

Abdoulie Sey and Alagi Yorro Jallow, tritely dismissed the reactions of
those included in the lists of YDE debtors as "just empty, preposterous and
wayward ramblings over irrelevant details contrary to what is contained in
the authentic lists, which we have reproduced in their entirety to prove to
Gambians and indeed the whole world that they were far from being the final,
polished products of a fabrication, as suggested by the Daily Observer and a
befuddled official of the YDE, whose ignorance makes him less competent to
dabble on the subject. Like the peeping yoke of a cracking shell that is the
YDE, the unvarnished truth about the lists has been irrevocably established,
doubly verified by NIA, the state and YDE sources and understood by those
debtors who know better than to raise an artificial storm in a teacup. Facts
and figures depended on by the official in question are from a fundamentally
flawed revised list, which expunged the names of administrative top-notches
to prevent their embarrassment".

Sey and Jallow, Editor-In-Chief and Managing Editor respectively, made a
will-or-woe insistence that the authenticity of the published lists was
without doubt unassailable and conclusive on who owed what to the Youth
Development Enterprise as at July-August last year and that as far as their
privileged sources are concerned, reactions from the Daily Observer, and "a
certain unprintable scallywag" were ill-advised, ill-informed, ill-poised,
self-revealing and self-defeating. The two editors also swiped at one
Mohammed Sarr, for pretending to know things of which he could not have got
the faintest inkling, thanks to his publicised ignorance about the workings
of the enterprise he supposedly works for as "big time" financial manager.
"It did not come to us as a surprise that he could doubt where the authentic
lists had emanated, thanks to the sensitive veins touched by the
revelations" the editors charged.

"We suffer no regrets for publishing what we know all too well to be the
ultimate and unvarnished truth and urge those raising hell over high waters
to revisit their account books and come out with the true unadulterated
details instead of beginning a fight in an empty room, waxing indignant at
nobody in particular or finding nothing really to pooh-pooh about. If there
is anything baseless it is in the colony of skewered facts and figures and
the farcical fraud about a so-called revised list with which the
unsuspecting public have been so consistently fed over the past couple of
months. We still have long memories about the theft of some YDE computers
last year, a matter which was reported to the Kairaba Police station but
which remains inconclusive to date. For a fact the theft soon became
something of a cover-up, a suspect action to cover some form of
mal-adroitness. Reports of the mysterious disappearance of the computers
where the original lists of YDE debtors were computed were deceptively kept
well away from the public knowledge and a so-called revised list, which
ensued made some conspicuous omissions of debts and debtors, apparently
expunged from the original list.

We have no time to verify the debt of over two hundred debtors but for a
fact we know them to be authentic - in point of fact, the only unadulterated
version authentic enough to be tendered in any Gambian law court. Besides,
even the usually hawkish NIA, have verified reports that Lamin Comma, who is
also included in the list was questioned by them over a debt of D1, 275,
000, which he said was incurred from some consultancy work. Also mentioned
by the NIA was Lamin Kuru Kongira who owed D520 for two bags of rice. So
even the NIA are convinced that there is no more authentic lists than those
we have reproduced in full".

"We read through the oblique lines of the Observer MD's statements and saw
only contradictions and a clever doctoring of the fact that a former
managing director of the company had entered into some business transactions
with the YDE, using the Daily Observer as his business name. That bonafide
journalists could cast imaginary shadows of doubt over where we get our
facts, and how, when they should know these, unwittingly demeans their own
journalistic standing. For their information we know that the remaining
consignment of sugar, which was taken in the name of the Daily Observer, was
sold to Sidi Taban, a Mauritanian, not far from their offices in Bakau. We
have another list (also reproduced) of individuals under "court prosses", on
the verge of being effectively sued by the YDE. Our conscience is clear that
the Observer liability was published in good faith and we reproduce the full
NIA-verified lists for the esteemed public's mature digest". (See Page 16
