Todays' edition of the Independent Newspaper is reporting that Baba Jobe who
is accused and subsequently sanctioned by the United Nations for both
trafficking in blood diamonds and arms in perpetuation of the horrendous
bloodletting Sierra Leone did travel Libya in the last few days. The U.N
resolutions that slapped the sanctions on him and all the publicly identified
culprits has the force of international law obliging all member nations to
scrupulously enforce it's provisions. That means The Gambia government
despite it's loud and laughable protestations of the innocence of Baba Jobe
is bound by it membership to the U.N to prevent him from traveling. Mr Jobe
who has a vague and dubious official title of assistant to the President
and travels on a Gambia gov't diplomatic passport and had to have traveled
out of a Gambian port of exit. We may yet hear a lame and bogus explanation
from the foreign ministry that the gov't wasn't aware of Baba Jobe's
'personal' trip to Libya or even deny that there was such a trip none of
which would change the fact the gov't has chosen to violate a resolution they
don't like. Baba like every civil servant is required to notify and seek
clearance from the gov't if they are traveling out of the country lest they
have issues outstanding.Baba is facing a potential indictment to face an
international tribunal for being an integral part of a racket that brought
murder and mayhem in Sierra Leone and continue to destabilize that entire
region. We have also learnt from reliable sources that Mr Jobe was not
freelancing and he did use Gambian territory to facilitate his criminal
behavior as part of a broader conspiracy. The gov't can try to shelter the
activities of a guy who has left very detailed footprints in the Sierra Leone
tragedy. I predict they would soon have a major scandal in their hands in
which they will have to answer for the entire conspiracy with every player
internationally held accountable. The gov'ts hoots and pants about how they
need more evidence of Baba's culpability is a not so sophisticated bid to
find out how wide a net the U.N has cast . It is there and when the time
comes it will all be out.
Karamba
