SoS Jahumpa urges Halifa to quit as Nadd coordinator Written by Pa Malick Faye Tuesday, 14 February 2006

Mr Bala Garba Jahumpa, alias “Actionman”, the Secretary of State for Works, Construction and Infrastructure, has called on Halifa Sallah, the coordinator of the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (Nadd), to step down as the coordinator of the alliance, as he had failed in the task assigned to him.

SoS Jahumpa made this call at an APRC rally at Kerewan Nyakoi, Wuli West, on the seventh day of the APRC countrywide tour.

According to him, Halifa’s inability to keep the alliance together had clearly shown to all Gambians that the opposition was not an alternative to the APRC.

He said that Nadd has no genuine programme for The Gambia, but were only interested in the futile exercise of unseating President Jammeh. “Let them tell you their plans for education, health, agriculture etc. They will not because there is none. What we have is a marriage of convenience as they belong to different political ideologies that cannot be combined.”

He again renewed his attack on the alliance between the PDOIS and the PPP, describing it as the funniest political development in the country. “Remember that the PDOIS since its formation has been castigating every move of the PPP. Everything the PPP did was condemned by the PDOIS. Now how can they make a U-turn and form an alliance with the PPP? Have they compromised their stance and ideology? This is a question all Gambians must ask PDOIS,” he said.

For his part, Janko Jawneh, the defeated APRC candidate for Wuli West in the last by-elections, said despite losing to the opposition in the area, the APRC government still tries to meet the development needs of the constituency. He therefore called on them to change attitude because it is to their disadvantage to remain in the opposition. “You have all witnessed the crisis in the opposition camp, which is a clear testimony of their inability to lead this country,” he said.

Adama Cham, deputy Administrative Secretary of the APRC and the NAM for Kombo North, said it was high time the people of Wuli West realised their miscalculation and turned to the APRC that is taking “The Gambia to safe shores”.
