Tomaa,

I am unable to help you out at the moment, but I know that two little known
Jola women were so instrumental in fighting the British in the Kombos that
they were both sent into exile in Mali when they were captured.
Unfortunately, I cannot remember their names but I belief that, according to
Patience Godwin-Sonko, the last of them was banished to Timbuktu (or was it
Gao?) in 1943.

Jola societal organisation has ever been one of the most advanced in our
region, largely because of its acephalous structures. There was no
historically designed role that propelled men into leadership positions.
Brave, heroic and strong women often led the resistance against British and
French domination. And it must be said that while other groups succumbed to
imeprial rule, the Jola continued struggling against foreign domination up
to the 1940s!Because Jola society was not organised around a head (such as a
chief), capturing any given leader did not significantly disrupt the
survival of the group as a whole. Someone else easily took his/her place.

Facts are to be found in Godwin-Sonko's book, Rulers of the Senegambia.
Unfortunately I cannot find mine, but someone else can hopefully help.

Greetings to the entire family

Sidibeh
