There is two more days to General Elections in Kenya. True to form,
politicians are accusing each other of corruption. The main Opposition
Party, National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) the majority of whom, including
their presidential candidate, were members of the present ruling party
(KANU)is accusing Government of corruption. KANU, in turn, reminds Narc
that most of them were members of KANU and cannot be absolved of being part
of Kenya's corruption problem.

At least, both political parties are reading from the same page with members
of Kenyan civil society and the internatiional community that corruption is
a major problem in Kenya. It got so bad that in 1997, IMF suspended
lending. In response to pressure from donors and civil society, the Office
of the Attorney General released the following statement:

"The Government has this morning formed an anticorruption squad to look into
the conduct of the anticorruption commission, which has been overseeing the
anticorruption task-force, which was earlier set to investigate the affairs
of a Government ad hoc committee appointed earlier this year to look into
the issue of high-level corruption among corrupt Officers". (The Daily
Nation, October 28, 1997)
