If you ask a knowledgeable Baddibunka on the other side of the river, he
would say the hyenas are no other than some Kiang folks looking for free
sheep and goat meat. Of course no Kiang ka would ever accept that theory.

I guess a more relevant question would be, are the affected villagers
living dangerously in hyena territory (encroachment) or these are
hungry, desperate hyenas with almost every antelop and bushpig (most
favoured prey) hunted out of existence?
In any case a careful analysis of the problem is required given that
these villages are next to the country's largest National Park.

Hyenas threaten Kiang villages
By Lamin Dibba
Apr 2, 2005, 08:07

Residents of some villages in the Kiang West district have been recently
gripped by terror following alleged attack of hyenas warranting
residents to put scarecrow in their compounds, impeccable sources told
the Daily Observer.

According to sources, the people of the villages of Jali, Keneba,
Kantong Kunda, Kuli Kunda are scared to venture in the outskirts of
their villages after dusk for fear of attack by hyenas.

“Villagers of Keneba and Jali frequently hear the cry of hyenas in the
night. They even come into the village and attack sheep and goats. This
is why people have put up scarecrows in their back and front yards to
deter the hyenas from entering their homes. Foot travel during the dark
between the villages have ceased now,” a resident of Keneba said.
