BACKGROUND

Islamic economics, banking and finance have evolved over the last
twenty-five years into full-fledged disciplines of knowledge and academic
research. This scheme has been devised by the Islamic Research and
Training Institute to produce the future scholars of Islamic economics,
banking and finance. IRTI Scholarship Scheme to support Ph.D. programs in
Islamic economics, banking and finance will operate within the
Encouragement and Promotion Program which IRTI runs to popularize and
promote Islamic economics.

The scheme is directed to those students who are working for the Ph.D
degree in some recognized university and are desirous to prepare their
Ph.D. theses in the areas of Islamic economics, banking and finance.



NAME OF THE SCHEME

This scheme is known as IRTI Scholarship Scheme to Support Ph.D. Programs
in Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance.



AIM AND OBJECTIVE

This scheme aims at providing financial support to encourage outstanding
research in the fields of Islamic economics, banking and finance at
universities in the member as well as in non-member countries.

The objective of the scheme is to produce qualified personnel in Islamic
economics, banking and finance who can contribute to the development of
these subjects and satisfy the needs of member countries in these areas.



SCOPE

The scheme shall be operative in selected universities in the OIC member
countries as well as at major universities in the West.



ELIGIBILITY

The IRTI Scholarship Scheme is meant to encourage economics, business and
finance students to undertake topics in Islamic economics, banking and
finance for their Ph.D. dissertations. It is open only for those students
who have already secured admission to a Ph.D. program at a recognized
university.

The scholarships are meant only for the students of proven merit who have
the potential of making an outstanding contribution and showing
exceptional merit in pursuing their Ph.D. program.

Applicants for the IRTI Scholarship Scheme shall be considered eligible
only if they fulfil the following:


Age not exceeding 30 years at the time of admission into a full time Ph.D.
program in any university.


Master degree in the subject concerned (economics, business, finance)


Above average grade in their Bachelors and Master program (GPA not less
than 3.5 out of 4 or B+ or 85 percent)


Finished their Ph.D. Course work with an average grade of no less than
what is specified in (3) above and passing the necessary qualifying
examination before starting their Ph.D. dissertation. This condition may
not apply for those universities where no course work is prescribed for
Ph.D.


Proof of admission to a Ph.D. program of the university, certified by the
Head of the Department concerned.


A proposed research plan on an accepted topic of Islamic Economics/Banking
/ Finance supported by a certification from the dissertation supervisor.

In determining the eligibility of applicants, candidates with published
papers in academic journals shall be awarded additional points.


VI. INSTITUTIONS AND PRIORITIES

In general, IRTI scholarships scheme will be available for all
universities in the member and non-member countries. However, priority
will be given to:


Dissertations being planned, on topics of priority in Islamic economics,
banking and finance, to be written in Arabic, English, or French.


Students who have been successful in getting admission in renowned
universities.


Universities where facilities exist for promoting quality research work in
Islamic economics, banking and finance.


Students who show good potential for making a contribution in these fields
through their research work.


VII. SELECTION PROCEDURES AND CRITERIA

The applications shall be processed at IRTI to establish whether the
applications are complete in all respects (i.e. age, degree, grade,
experience, publications, fields of study, and university rank) to
determine eligibility of candidates.

IRTI shall prepare a short list of eligible applications. Applications
with incomplete information shall not be considered eligible.

The short list of eligible candidates shall be presented to the IRTI
Academic Committee along with relevant documents. The Academic Committee
shall select and recommend the successful candidates for the award of
scholarship.

The Academic Committee shall select the successful candidates strictly on
basis of merit. It may base its decision, inter alia, on the scholastic
record; performance of candidates in previous examinations and their
potential to make a substantial contribution to Islamic economics, banking
and finance. The Committee may evaluate any published works of the
candidates, as well as their proposed area of research, and the
institutions where the scholars shall be pursuing their studies.

IRTI shall present the list of candidates recommended by the Academic
Committee to the Management for approval. Only the successful candidates
shall be notified of the result.


VIII. BENEFITS AND FACILITIES

The benefits and facilities of the IRTI Scholarship Scheme would vary
depending upon the quality of the research plan and the potential of
making a good contribution to knowledge as determined by the IRTI Academic
Committee. However, it shall generally include anyone/ some/ all of the
following:




Full or partial payment of tuition fee charged by the university for a
maximum period of three years, as recommended by the Academic Committee.


A non-recurring cash grant not to exceed US $ 1000 (one thousand United
States dollars) for fieldwork directly related to the research program.


A non-recurring cash grant not to exceed US $ 1000 (one thousand United
States dollars) to cover the expenses on word/data processing connected
with the study and dissertation, (including the purchase of a personal
computer) provided that this amount shall be payable only in the final
year of the Ph.D. program. The Chairman of the Dissertation Committee /
Advisor shall testify that research work is complete.


If a dissertation is found publishable by IRTI, a grant of $2000 (two
thousand U.S. dollars) shall be paid against its publication as an IRTI
document.


A collection of IRTI publications, free of charge, which the scholar may
need during his/her research work.


IX. DURATION AND RENEWAL


The scholarship shall be awarded initially for one year only.


The scholarship shall be renewable for another two years, subject to
report of good performance by the advisor and maintenance of a GPA not
less than 3.5 out of 4.


The total duration of scholarship shall not exceed three years.


No extension shall be granted beyond three years.


X. OBLIGATIONS

The candidates granted the scholarship are expected to:


Provide IRTI a written statement that they will undertake their Ph.D.
dissertation in the area of Islamic economics, banking and finance and
that they will not change their intention in the course of their studies.
However, if a student goes back on this undertaking and writes a
dissertation in any area other than the one for which the Scholarship has
been given, IRTI shall have right to suspend the scholarship immediately
and recover the amount that has already been paid to him/her.


Devote themselves to their studies on a full time basis and without
interruption and provide IRTI with reports on their academic progress on a
regular basis.


Provide IRTI with an electronic and a hard copy of their finalized
dissertation.


Mention in the dissertation that the scholar was holding IRTI scholarship
during the period of his/her research work.


XI. PUBLICATION


The candidates who are granted IRTI Scholarship shall be free to submit to
IRTI their dissertation for consideration of publication under the
Encouragement and Promotion Program.


The candidates doing so shall abide by the Rules of the Encouragement and
Promotion Program.


The scholars, who would like to publish their dissertation elsewhere,
shall have to obtain prior permission from IRTI.


The scholars shall acknowledge financial contribution of IRTI at a
prominent place if their dissertation is published outside IRTI after
obtaining necessary permission.


XII. HOW TO APPLY

In order to apply, interested candidates may downloaded and fill

following documents.


Curriculum vitae


Passport size Photograph of the candidate


A documentary evidence of age


Attested copies of earlier degrees /diplomas


Attested transcripts of earlier examinations


Copy of cover page and summary of MA / M.Phil dissertation (if applicable).


Copies of any publications.


List of scholarships / awards obtained.


Proof of admission to Ph.D. Program


A summary statement of proposed topic of research


A letter from the department / advisor stating that facilities exist at
the department / university for successful completion of research work in
Islamic economics, banking and finance.


A signed statement from the candidate that he will undertake his/her Ph.D.
dissertation in the area of Islamic economics, banking and finance.

The application form along with the copies of required documents should
reach IRTI preferably on or before September 30 every year. Any
application received after this date may be processed only for the next
academic year. However, the candidates applying for a partial or special
grant such as grant for field work only may apply at any time.
