Dancing When Found, The Journey of the Lost Youth of Sudan

A Special Evening of Story, Song and Dance

Benefit for the Lost Youth of Sudan

7:00 pm, Saturday, October 26th, 2002

Town Hall, Seattle, WA

The remarkable story of the Lost Youth of Sudan has spread all over the
world. After losing their families and seeing their villages burned,
thousands of orphans wandered for hundreds of miles across the Sahara
desert. Each time they found a haven, the misfortunes of war drove them
further into an uncertain future. Hunted by armies, lions and hyenas,
suffering starvation and disease, they miraculously survived.

Eventually, more than a hundred Lost Youth landed in the Pacific
Northwest, only to find that America, the land of dreams when imagined
from a distance, has its own hazards and ways in which people can be
lost. These are young people who have survived unthinkable hardships and
unknowable sufferings. Now, they have an opportunity to have a home, an
education and a future.

WE HAVE A CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN LOST LIVES WHICH HAVE BEEN
FOUND.

We call this evening Dancing When Found because the Lost Youth seem to
find their way, their spirit, their joy and essential means of
expression when they dance. The songs they sing describe key scenes and
emotional moments in their long journey in search of refuge. They offer
a story which communicates their struggle to survive, their indomitable
spirit and the camaraderie of the dance.

Their story connects to the refugee in everyone, to the part of each
person that knows what it means to be lost in this world. Through
dancing the Lost Youth find themselves again and again and in so doing
invite everyone present to find the spirit of their own life.

Now, the Lost Youth seek professional training and higher education in
order to establish themselves in America. You are invited to attend this
unique event, to witness their spirit of survival and support the
ongoing journey of the Lost Youth.
