It has been about two months now since the arrogant and megalomaniac Pap Cheyassin Secka was booted out of office and still we have heard nothing about Dumo Saho. It is well known that Pap Cheyassin had a grudge against Dumo and that was the reason of "framing" him. In November 1999, Dumo had a confrontation with Pap Cheyassin and told him, in no uncertain terms, what he felt about him. That is Dumo to all who knew him. But Pap Cheyassin kept that in mind and his first real action as Attorney General was to see Dumo behind bars. That may be retributive some would say, but that's how it is in the repressive and doctorial Gambia. And now that Pap Cheyassin is gone, why is Dumo still languishing at 'Mile Two".

When Pap Cheyassin was fired and Joe Joof appointed, I heard voices on Gambia-L commenting on the suitability of Joof as AG. To be very fair, I think that was unfair to Joof and against all rules of simple common sense. One has to be honest with himself and the world when dealing with these situations. Joe Joof's competence or unsuitability is totally immaterial here. The back of Cheyassin was the matter. If ever there was anyone who wanted to see the back of Pap Cheyassin, Joe Joof would have been at the forefront. Remember, Joe Joof was a member of the Commission that was publicly humiliated by Pap Cheyassin, just a week before, for spending seven months "digging their noses". Joe Joof did not opt for the office, but if given to him for the unceremonious disgrace of Pap Cheyassin, I think he should gladly take it. As long as the notorious menace is out of the way. I believe it is the duty of every sane person to adopt a wait-and-see attitude while the new AG makes his move.

When Pap Cheyassin was appointed, although I opposed it from the beginning, I thought he was going to work on Ousman 'Koro' Ceesay case, knowing the relation between Pap Cheyassin Secka and Kotor Sainey Ceesay, the father of Koro Ceesay, but my expectation was not in Pap Cheyassin's plans. Instead all he was engage in was to incriminate all those who disagreed with him before he became the AG.

Now that "Ndnoo" Joof is sitting on Pap Cheyassin's seat, I expect him to act justifiably towards his fellow citizen, and to investigate all cases that are pending and not to let anyone spend one minute in jail for what he is innocent of. The acquittal and re-arrest of Lt. Sanneh is nothing new. Pap Cheyassin once mentioned that Sanneh should face a court martial. Now that Pap Cheyassin is not there, it is incumbent on Joseph Joof to respect the findings of the Courts and drop all charges against Lt. Sanneh and all those jointly accused with him.

Dumo Saho has done a long time now for something he privately had with Pap Cheyassin. The longer Dumo stays in detention, the more Joe Joof will be looking more like Pap Cheyassin Secka. For Joe Joof to function on his own, he has to review all the cases he inherited and far beyond. To be an Attorney General and pursue the lines of your predecessor, could cause people to ask the difference between Joseph Joof and Pap Cheyassin Secka, and anything that is close to the way Pap Cheyassin Secka functioned is totally unacceptable to the Gambian people. The Point has it that 24 people were released "on the occasion of the Commemoration of Independence Day", going through the list of those released, I missed one name - Dumo Saho. What about Dumo Saho? Will he spend "Tobaski" with his family and loved ones?

To maintain the integrity of an honest AG is no more than the release of innocent people like DUMO SAHO.

Prince.
