Folks, this is just a gentle reminder that our compatriots in kentucky are
still in INS custody and would need your kind assistance to secure bail. I
know times are hard but please let us try to help in anyway possible.
Their's for the most part was a case of being at the wrong place at the
wrong time. So please remember them and help anyway possible. Max Njie is
receiving donations on their behalf.

On a similar subject, I heard on NPR, this morning, the many hurdles foreign
students and their counselors at Georgetown University are facing with the
new INS regulations regarding foreign students. They talked about the
database the the Federal government is compiling on foreign students and how
this might seriously impact the students. There are a lot of uncertainties
and our communities cannot just sit and watch. We need to get up to speed
with the new changes. After the recent Immigration round-up in Minnesota,
the African community there invited the INS community liaison to a meeting
and they said that the meeting was very informative and the African
community in Minnesota benefited greatly from the exchange. May be someone
from Minnesota can shed some light on the outcome for this list. We cannot
be silent about this, folks. If folks are skeptical about bringing the INS
in our midst, let us then invite immigration lawyers to sensitize our
community on the new rules and how it applies to the various challenges that
we may face in the years ahead.

The worst thing we can do is to pretend that we are not personally
affected, or it is not our problem. The many affected may be your brothers,
friends, relatives etc. It is no longer enough that you are in school, but
that you are taking the minimum required load; you have to let INS know that
you are sitting out a semester if you intend to; they want to know about
your registration for the next semester; If you change your address you have
to inform them; the hours you spend working, etc. We have Abdoulaye Swareh
and many others in and out of our communities that we can bring in to put us
up to speed about the new rules. My intension is not to infringe on
anyone's privacy. So, if one feels that way my apologies, but I think it
will be for the good of our community that we acquire as much information
about the new rules and how it applies to our various circumstances.

>>Dear Editor,
>>
>>This letter is in response to your irresponsible article published in your
>>paper on Thursday December 12. I just want to point out a few things to
>>you. I hope if you are a responsible editor and you will recant your
>>story, publish this email and apologise to all the Gambians in the US.
>>First of all Madison is a city in the State of Wisconson, it is not a
>>state and all the arrests took place in Lexington, Kentucky. Secondly,
>>only one of the people arrested was trying to obtain a social security
>>card by unlawful means. This person being new, I guess was not even aware
>>of the fact that what he was doing was a felony under US laws. The other
>>ten people were arrested for overstaying their visas and or working
>>without INS authorization. Since you were too lazy to research the facts
>>of this story or did not have the means to do so, you should have simply
>>publish my entire email without the contact information. You were trying
>>to keep the story legit as if you spoke to someone about the story, but
>>your article is almost a replica of my email that was forwarded to the
>>Gambia-L.
>>
>>I am not a journalist and I do not know what your ethical standards are,
>>but I guess replicating other people's articles and twisting the facts are
>>not ethical. More over your failure to acknowledge the source of the story
>>and your attempt to make it like you get your information from a credible
>>independent source would also be unethical.
>>
>>You can also forward this to your friend at the Independent as the story
>>he published last week was unfounded and have no credible information.
>>
>>Thanks
