Subject: [WASAN] Nelson Mandela urged Iraq Monday to allow United Nations

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African statesman Nelson Mandela urged
Iraq Monday to allow United Nations weapons inspectors back into the
country to prevent a "destructive conflict" among nations.

In a speech to delegates attending a Muslim symposium, Mandela said
he had called Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz as part of an
intense personal lobbying effort to convince both Western and Arab
nations to respect U.N. resolutions.

"I have spoken...to Tareq Aziz and tried to persuade him that Iraq
must allow the U.N. weapons inspectors to visit without any
restrictions, to be able to satisfy themselves that there are no
weapons of mass destruction," Mandela said.

"I sincerely hope that Iraq will obey the resolutions of the U.N.,"
the former South African president said.

Last week, Mandela urged the United States to act only through the
United Nations in its campaign against Iraq after branding Washington
a "threat to world peace" in an interview with Newsweek magazine.

"We have called on the United States and Britain to work... strictly
through the organs of the United Nations if they thought Iraq was a
threat to world peace," Mandela said on Monday.

Mandela said he had also spoken to Secretary of State Colin Powell (
news - web sites), Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz,
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak ( news - web sites) and Libyan
leader Muammar Gaddafi ( news - web sites) to get their support for
the U.N..

The U.N. Security Council is expected to draft new deadlines for Iraq
to fully comply with resolutions imposed after U.S.-led forces
ejected it from Kuwait after a seven-month occupation 11 years ago.
U.N. arms inspectors left Iraq just before U.S.-British air strikes
in 1998.

Washington has said it is prepared to act alone to disarm the Iraqi
leader, a pledge that has triggered widespread dismay and opposition
among many of its key allies and the Arab world.

But in the last few days, U.S. officials have said they are prepared
to see what the U.N. effort would do.

Earlier Monday, Saudi Arabia said it would back U.N. sanctioned
action against Iraq but not a unilateral U.S. attack, in an apparent
shift from its outright rejection of any military rejection against
its neighbor.
