Written by DO Wednesday, 28 December 2005 President Yahya Jammeh’s lead in the preservation and promotion of traditional medicine is indeed commendable.
It is not only commendable of him to take the lead role in such an important initiative, but it is also quite encouraging to the nation in particular and Africa in general.

It is very important for Africans to protect their God-given knowledge by ensuring that it is not lost. Often, one hears people saying that some elders die without passing on their wisdom and knowledge to the younger ones.

It is time that phenomenon was reversed. The efficacy of traditional medicine is quite unquestionable. It is proven that they are sometimes even more efficacious than modern medicine.

In most cases, when modern medicine seems inefficacious, people usually resort to traditional medicine and eventually get cured.

That shows that traditional medicine can complement modern medicine a great deal. It was not therefore surprising that hundreds of people rushed to the 22nd July Square in Banjul last week to have their shares of the prescribled medicine tagged: Kanilai Medicine. It shows how much it is hotly sought after by the people.

The variety of diseases that traditional medicine can cure range from malaria, diabetes, infertility, migrane, headache, stomach ulcer, sexual impotence, diarrhoea, dysentry, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, to name a few. All these diseases are prevalent in The Gambia and it is common knowledge that many Gambians turn to traditional healers and medicine when they fail to be cured through Western therapetic methods. We therefore join the thousands of Gambians who applaud this initiative of President Jammeh not only to make this discovery accessible to all Gambians, but also for giving traditional medicine its rightful place in our society.

The Berending Traditional Healing Centre is also another initiative that has been receiving support from President Jammeh. A visit to the Berending Centre shows how popular the outpatient service is. Such initiatives should be promoted nationwide, as there is growing confidence in the efficacy of traditional medicine.

We therefore congratulate President Jammeh on this bold initiative and call on other traditional medicine practitioners to take a leaf out of President Jammeh’s book.
