on July 17 to stop torture/terror trade, illegal gun trafficking (and plz
forward)

Dear AIUSA friends and colleagues:

We hope you will be able to join us in New York City on July 17 for an
important rally against the torture/terror trade. On this date, a
coalition of organizations including AIUSA are sponsoring an international
rally at the UN to Stop Gun Trafficking, End Torture, and Save Lives, which
will be held outside a major UN conference on the Illicit Trade in Small
Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects.

This day of action is an important part of our torture campaign work and
ongoing work to end arms transfers to human rights abusers. Please forward
this to friends and colleagues, especially those in the New York, New
England, and Mid Atlantic region areas.

Many thanks & best regards,

Lora Lumpe for the AIUSA MSP Working Group &
Karen Robinson and Meredith Larson - for the AIUSA Campaign Unit

Guns Know No Borders International Rally at the UN to Stop Gun Trafficking,
End Torture, Save Lives
Tuesday, 17 July
47th and 1st Avenue, NY (Dag Hammarskjold Plaza)
main program from 11-2 pm
SPREAD THE WORD! PLAN TO ATTEND! BRING OTHERS!

Approximately a half a million people are killed each year with small arms
and light weapons?most in acts of war, crime or repression. While many
die, others make money by placing guns into torturers' and murderers' hands.
To curb this deadly trade, the UN is holding its first ever global
conference on the illicit traffic in small arms in New York during 9-20
July. The NRA will be present; you should be, too!

Amnesty International USA, the American Friends Service Committee, New
Yorkers Against Gun Violence, the Silent March, the International Action
Network on Small Arms and others are organizing a public rally to press
diplomats to take meaningful action.

The day will include music, dance and speakers and provide an opportunity to
network with activists from around the world working against gun violence.

11-12 pm Peace to the City Dance, a contemporary ballet from Brazil,
sponsored by the World Council of Churches
12-2 pm I Do Mind Dying! A program of speakers and music calling on
governments to stop gunrunning and save lives. AIUSA Executive Director
Bill Schulz is included in the speaker line-up.
2-5 pm Workshops, networking, speak out, music, silent vigil

The site is centrally located to the Grand Central Station, and a short cab
ride from Penn Station and Port Authority Bus Terminal. Come for the entire
day, or part of the program--but do attend!

Groups are encouraged to bring literature, posters, stickers, and shoes for
the Silent March victims' shoes display. "Person" an information table at
the site for your organization or group! To find out about literature
display, call Kevin Joseph at the Quaker UN Office, 212-682-2745. For
general information and updates on the program, check www.iansa.org and/or
