A commendable and bold humanitarian move by the Bishop given what we know
about the MAD MULLAH OF STATE HOUSE (IMAM FATTY)when it comes to fighting
sexually transmitted diseases in our society. Thanks Bishop Johnson for
including in your ARSENAL A VERY VITAL TOOL (CONDOMS) IN THE FIGHT AGAINST
HIV/AIDS.

  Bishop Johnson’s New Fight

Bishop Johnson recently announced that the Anglican Diocese of Gambia has
taken the bold step of acknowledging the reality of HIV/AIDS in the country
and declared an uncompromising war against it with all the arsenal at her
disposal, including condoms. This revelation was made by Bishop of Gambia
and Dean of the province of West Africa Rt. Rev. S. Tilewa Johnson while
speaking at a one day sensitization seminar for members of the clergy held
recently at Shalom Retreat Centre. According to Bishop Johnson, it has been
the vision of the Anglican church in the Gambia to embark upon a programme
of Home Based Care.

“This would involve offering nursing care to the elderly, those with long
term illness and those with terminal illness such as people who have
developed AIDS from the HIV. Bishop Johnson disclosed that “the healing
ministry is one that is central to the church of Jesus Christ” noting that
given the reality of HIV/AIDS, the church would actively be involved in the
fight against it. He stressed that after many years off the playing field,
the Anglican Mission Development Ministries (AMDM) was once more becoming
involved in the area of health care. Bishop Johnson stated that though there
are specific staffed persons for the programme, the church still needs some
volunteers both for the Home Based Care and the Health Education.

In her paper titled “HIV/AIDS, a reality in The Gambia,” Dr. Gisela
Schneider, of Hands On Care project Brikama, posited that a study conducted
in four Zones in the country in 1993/95 and 2000/01 indicated that HIV 1 is
increasing against HIV 2. According to the paper, about 16,000 Gambians live
with HIV 1 and HIV 2 with many unknown cases living among us.” She,
therefore, called for attitudinal change in our social behaviour as well as
vis a vis the myths surrounding HIV/AIDS.
