Nkrumah's place in the history books is secure. He was a great visionary
leader whose vision of a united Africa laid the grounds for the eventual
creation of the OAU. The construction of the Volta dam was Nkrumah's
brainchild. Listing Nkrumah's many accomplishments will probably require a
website of its own! Nobody is disputing the guy's contributions but that
does not render him immune to scrutiny or criticism.
Our reverence for Nkrumah does not have to reduce us all to apologists
for his dictatorial ways that actually led to his downfall. When the tenure
of any leader is put under the microscope, not only should we celebrate their
contributions but we should also acknowledge their shortcomings. If we fail
to consider the whole picture, history might judge criminals like Hitler
favorably because if one thinks hard(real hard) enough, Hitler did do one
good thing; I just don't know what it is.
            Peace!
                 Amat
