Subject: [wa-afr] FW: QUERY: African coalitions in the US

Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2001 12:45:54 -0400
From: Leigh Swigart <[log in to unmask]>

Two weeks ago, a Coalition of African Communities was officially formed in
the Philadelphia area. The mission of the Coalition is to empower local
African refugee and immigrant communities by:

* facilitating family access to health and social services, with special
focus on women, children and the youth,
* promoting economic development,
* facilitating resolution of inter- and intra-group conflicts,
* advocating on issues of concern to African communities, and
* educating the media and broader public on African cultures and
experiences.

The Coalition will proactively seek and develop partnerships with
non-profit, public, private, educational and African American institutions
in the greater Philadelphia area to achieve its mission.

QUESTION: Does anyone know of similar African coalitions or federations in
other cities in the United States, or in any other country with large and
diverse African immigrant communities? The Coalition leaders in Philadelphi
would be interested to learn of the experiences of similar organizations.

Thank you,

Leigh Swigart
