CALL FOR PAPERS
International Seminar on Islamic Wealth Creation

University of Durham, 7th - 9th July 2003

In a global economy where wealth determines power and influence, due to
dominance of the interest mechanism, wealth creation and value
preservation is one of the greatest challenges facing Muslims and the
Islamic World as a whole. In this regard there is a need to focus on
longer term issues of Islamic capital accumulation and its contribution
to the development of Muslim societies, including those in the West.

Due the importance of this theme, the Islamic Research and Training
Institute of the Islamic Development Bank and University of Durham,
United Kingdom have decided to organize an International Seminar on
Islamic Wealth Creation to be held in the University of Durham during
July 7-9 2003. The Seminar will coincide with the opening by H. H. Dr.
Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, of the new
building housing the University of Durham's Institute for Middle
Eastern
and Islamic Studies.

Topics to be covered in the Seminar include:

    * the growth of Islamic bank assets
    * Islamic fund management
    * Islam and entrepreneurship
    * development of Islamic financial markets
    * risk management for Islamic wealth.

Technical finance papers are welcome, as are those of an empirical
nature and institutional case studies.

The organizers aim is to attract high quality papers from both academic
speakers and bankers involved in the practicalities of Islamic finance,
including retail and investment banking and fund management. Papers
from
younger scholars and bankers are particularly welcome.

Abstracts of papers of not more than 250 words on the topics listed
above and related areas should be submitted by 22nd January 2003.
Completed papers of 5,000 to 7,500 words should be submitted by 20th
March 2003. The conference organizers will pay the transportation and
accommodation costs of those scholars and academics whose papers are
selected.
