Hi!
A demonstration was held in Stockholm on Saturday, 29th April 2000 at Sergelstorg in central Stockholm. The participation was not as expected from the side of the Gambians. However, the general atmosphere was good and favourable to the occasion. The weather was good and the place was full of people. About 400 leaflets were distributed. The slogans on the main banner and the placards read:

Main Banner:
a.. Protest against the killing of students in the Gambia

Placards:
  a.. Justice must reign
b.. Release all the students arrested
  c.. Stop the violence
d.. Show solidarity with the Gambian students
e.. Stop the encroachment and the violence
The protest document (petition letter agreed upon on Gambia-l) was read by Momodou Sidibeh and later repeated by Landing A Sanyang.

Mats Utbult, a Swedish subscriber on Gambia-l, rendered tremendous help in translating the original document from English to Swedish.

The Socialist Party (Rättvisepartiet Socialisterna) members played an active roll. They showed maximum solidarity. In fact, their solidarity had added more spice to the whole atmosphere. There message was clear; they condemned the brutality, the injustice and the usurpation of fundamental human rights cowardly levied on the students by the security forces.

They also condemned the Swedish media for their failure to write and/or broadcast about this brutal massacre in the Gambia. The media instead concentrated on the land crisis in Zimbabwe and here too, they were condemned for bias reporting.

There was a strong demand for the Swedish media to report on this unprecedented student massacre and to even file protest letters against the Gambian government.

The Socialist Party promised to carry this event in there weekly newspaper called "Offensiv".

Thanks.
                                                                                                            Buharry.
