Gamcel had 3700 subscribers in 1998 and this number jumped to 5,300 in 1999.
Now, three years later, you want to tell me that in just over 2 years, this
cellular service picked up approximately 30,000 new subscribers? The growth
rate in subscriber levels between 1998 and 1999 certainly does not justify
the nos you and Gassama are spouting here."

GAMCEL did not exist in 1998, so I am assuming that you mean GAMTEL. Rate of
growth of land/fix lines is much more slower that the rate of growth of
mobile phones. You can check the statistics in the US, Europe or any where
else. To connect a GAMTEL line would require a minimum of D800 installation
fee while there is no such thing with GSM Mobile. For D800 you can get a
phone and a number and being a mobile, you could be reached in most parts of
The Gambia. GAMCEL sim cards are now being sold for D300 while AFRICEL is
currently running a "buy one and get one free" and this means for D300 you
can get two sim cards (two diffrent numbers). Students, cab drivers etc are
carrying mobile phones around. MOBILE HEAVEN is selling mobile phones for as
low as D500. People are getting connected, so whether you believe our
figures or not, it does not matter

PEACE
