The astonishing declaration of Osama bin Laden to America on the eve of the presidential election is a message that unfortunately speaks for the majority of the world's 1.3 billion Muslims.

It speaks of what are perceived to be gross injustices committed against the Muslims of Palestine, Lebanon, and now Iraq. It speaks of the catastrophic events of September 11 as an attack on the US in response to injustices never acknowledged by either President George Bush or by his Democratic Challenger, Senator John kerry.

It speaks of the hypocrisy of a President who declares that he loves freedom, which he says is God's gift to people denied basic freedom for decades. And it speaks to whoever wins the election, that he will never defeat an entire civilisation that believes, with greater conviction than ever, that it is under attack by the forces of Judeo-Christendom.
The Reverend Dr Vincent Zankin
Rivett (ACT) October 31

With up to 58,000 postal votes missing, ("Chads or not, Florida keeps them hanging," Herald, October 30-31) isn't it time that the United Nations was asked to oversee the US presidential election to make sure there isn't any vote-rigging and hanging chads. The US might be the world's only superpower but its elections are on par with those held in a developing country.
Robert Pallister,
Punhbowl, October 30.

Given the strange goings on in Florida and elsewhere, one can only assume that the UN will realise it is time to send in independent observers to help the US achieve a democratic result. After all they have been to Zimbabwe and Afghanistan and other places where the will of the people is at risk of being subverted.
Eric Scott,
Paddington, October 30
