While we pay tribute to Professors Wiseman and Hughes, we should also
recognise the scholarly works of yet another friend of The Gambia, the late
Prof. Margaret Haswell a social anthropologist/economist. She has written
extensively on rural development and devouted a good part of her academic
life to the study of the village of Geineri(LRD). Her long association with
and study of Geineri started in 1947; then a student. This remarkable
British lady has left an indelible mark on the village of Geineri and to
many a life in rural Gambia. I owe her a debt of gratitute for teaching me
how to put a human face to the numbers. To Arnold Hughes, I pray for a
remission of this horrible illness.
