Gambia to host next AU summit

The African Union’s Assembly of Heads of State have selected The Gambia to 
host the July 2006 AU Summit. This decision was made at the recently concluded 
Fourth Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit held in Abuja, Nigeria.

According to a communique from the department of state for Foreign Affairs, 
the decision of the AU is a reaffirmation of the confidence of the African 
heads of state in the leadership of President Jammeh and the capacity to organise 
a successful Summit.

It added that the decision outlining this decision recalls the previous 
decision of the Summit in July, 2004, on the convening of two ordinary sessions of 
the Assembly each year and that the January session of the Assembly shall 
henceforth be held in the last week in January at the Union’s headquarters, during 
which the chairperson of the Assembly shall be elected.

The Assembly further decided that the January Session should be convened on 
an exceptional basis outside the headquarters by decision of the Assembly upon 
the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, which comprises of Foreign 
Ministers of member states of the AU. 
However, according to release, such hosting shall not be linked to the 
chairmanship of the Union.

The release noted that the term of office of the current chairperson and the 
Bureau of the Assembly was extended from July 2005 to January 2006.

The secretary of state for Foreign Affairs, Sidi Morro Sanneh, represented 
President Jammeh at the Summit
