A worthy cause indeed. However, I have my doubts in this statement: "In
officially launching the club Ebrima K. Sarr the Commissioner of Western
Division said disability does not mean inability. He said 70 percent of the
Gambian population is disabled in one way or the other including himself. He
said in this world of uncertainty it is always wise to prepare for
eventualities when able-bodied individuals could be afflicted." Seventy
percent of us disabled in one form or another? Huuh!

Hundreds of disabled youths on Saturday converged at The Gambia College to
witness the launching of The Gambia College Disabled Youths Club.

In his remarks, the chairman of the club Momodou S. R Kujabi said after some
time of appraisal 'we decided to take up the initiative of establishing the
society in the college to give us the opportunity to also play a pivotal
role as teachers they will be educating the young to care and respect the
integrity of all human beings irrespective of physical disability'.

He added that their main objective is to transform disabled youths from
being objects of scorn and pity and to also protect the disabled from social
and moral abuse by others taking advantage of their disability.

He said facilitating and co-coordinating a holistic approach by stakeholders
in the implementation of issues concerning disabled youths during decision
making and ensuring that disabled youths receive equal basic education,
training and skills are also part of the agenda.

In officially launching the club Ebrima K. Sarr the Commissioner of Western
Division said disability does not mean inability. He said 70 percent of the
Gambian population is disabled in one way or the other including himself. He
said in this world of uncertainty it is always wise to prepare for
eventualities when able-bodied individuals could be afflicted.

He called on the government to implement the constitutional rights of
disabled people as a group with all rights to live.

Other speakers included the chairman of the disabled union Ebrima Dibbasey.

The launching was followed by a symposium involving Halifa Sallah,
Sabastinian Njie and others.
