Storm Kills 16 In Southern Senegal

August 24, 1999

DAKAR, Senegal (PANA) - Sixteen Senegalese fishermen were killed in a
violent storm off the coast of Kafountine, Bignona
district, in the southern region of Ziguinchor.

The state owned daily, Soleil, reported Tuesday that the fishermen died
when their boats were destroyed by the storm, called
''Cindy'', between Wednesday and Friday.

It said that 58 other fishermen were rescued by Senegalese and French
troops Sunday, adding that 73 people have been
reported missing.

Thirteen of the wrecked boats have been recovered, while 18 others are
still missing.

The southern Senegalese Atlantic coast has recently experienced violent
winds and heavy rains, that have caused serious
flooding.

On 18 August, a tornado hit Joal-Fadiouth, the village of former
President Leopold Sedar Senghor, about 80 km from Dakar,
killing two people and causing serious damage.

In Kaolack, about 200 km from Dakar, flooding from the heavy rains also
caused serious damage and made thousands
homeless.
