Fellow Gambians, it may sound like laying the cart before the horse, but making my case early enough is very compelling for a unified force for change in 2006 elections. Having observed the political climate in the Gambia for the past couple of years, I have come to the conclusion that Hamat Bah is the best and most suitable compromise candidate for the opposition coalition in 2006.
Several factors have contributed to this assessment. First and foremost was the failure of the opposition to challenge the APRC under one platform in 2001 elections because they could not make a satisfactory decision between Darboe and Dibba, as well as taking on board PDOIS and NRP. Secondly, the disintegration of UDP, a sign that the major opposition party is in disarray. Thirdly and probably the most important factor, is the inherent animosity between contending leaders for the top job. There is no love lust between Darboe and Juwara. Juwara, is probably a good leader for a commando unit. As for Darboe who wont be associated with tough decisions, would be shattered if handed the mantle of power. What good can we expect from his stewardship? Forthly, Jatta and PDOIS, represent contentment and zero tolerant to society’s best friend; greed and corruption. This is a vise that is hard if not impossible to do away with completely. Fifthly, O.J and the PPP represent an era of retrogression and backwardness, which I think Gambians will a million times say; we don’t want to go back to. They should go and campaign in the desert because they don’t believe in development. Jammeh, of cause a strong believer in repression and reprisals. Where could we have found a perfect man lead a death squard?
Hamat Bah on the other hand is a classic politician with a charismatic and appealing language, capable of reconciling all our inadequacies and excesses. He can represent the angry and revenge drunken people, the happy and arrogant people, the corrupt and backward thinking people and the incorruptible and forward thinking people. Moreover, he was the candidate with the highest percentage of increase in the last election, when both APRC and UDP coalition dropped significantly. In my view, if given this opportunity to lead the coalition, the repressive regime would be forgotten come 2006. As I conclude, I urge all Gambians across the divide not to jump to quick condemnation but to seriously think about this proposal so that our children could be spared from CRY BANJUL episode on CNN. Surely, I habour no hard feelings or grudge against anyone, I am simply expression my humble opinions.
“May God guide our actions towards the common good”
HAPPY 2004 TO YOU ALL IN ADVANCE!!!
