The Daily Observer (Banjul)

Highly placed sources close to the main opposition United Democratic Party
(UDP) have revealed to the Daily Observer that the party has nominated its
candidates from the ranks of its 1996 contestants, to run for office in the
upcoming National Assembly elections.

Sources who preferred anonymity, told the Daily Observer that the
nominations came in the wake of a consultative meeting between the party
executive and constituency chairpersons on matters relating to the upcoming
elections. "At the end of their consultations, they agreed to select the old
candidates to contest the National Assembly elections.

Sources also spoke to the Daily Observer of possible changes within Kombo
central, Kombo East and Niani constituencies. Some of the old candidates to
be replaced are Wassa Janneh and Pa Saikou Kujabi, currently in USA and the
former NAM, Almamy Abubacarr Touray who defected to the APRC and now
commissioner of CRD.

When the UDP bureau was contacted for confirmation, the party leader was not
available for comment but a senior executive in the party said he was not
aware of the meeting. However, a member who preferred anonymity confirmed
the story.
