Gambian Chief Justice Says He Resigned

The Banjul newspaper, Daily Observer which Tuesday reported the dismissal of
Gambian Chief Justice Felix Lartey, Wednesday said he rather resigned.

The paper reported Tuesday that Lartey was sacked along with three other
judicial officials, without citing reasons for the dismissals.

But in a publication on Wednesday, it said the chief justice rather resigned
"in protest to the firing of the Master of the Supreme Court and acting
Judicial Secretary, Ousman Jammeh".

It said Lartey resigned Monday at an emergency meeting of judges in Banjul.

Lartey, who is said to have refused to renew his contract, which expired in
November 2000, succeeded the Sierra Leonean-born Justice Omar Alghali whose
contract expired in 1998.

Meanwhile, judges and members of the Gambian bar have expressed concern over
the development, describing it as "unfavourable to the image of the
judiciary".
