Job description:

The International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRI) is seeking
an outstanding individual to advance the application of climate information
and seasonal forecasts to food production and food security. Headquartered
in Palisades, New York, the IRI (see http://iri.columbia.edu/) was
established in 1996 through a cooperative agreement between the NOAA Office
of Global Programs and Columbia University. The mission of the IRI is to
enhance society's capability to understand, anticipate and manage the
impacts of seasonal climate fluctuations, in order to improve human welfare
and the environment, especially in developing countries. Current and
emerging areas of activity at the IRI in agriculture and food security
include smallholder rain-fed farming systems in South Asia; food security
early warning in the Greater Horn of Africa; work with a farmer association
in Argentina; an Advanced Training Institute on Climate Variability and Food
Security, and methodological research on such things as communication of
probabilistic climate information to farmers and their advisors, linking
climate forecasts to crop simulation, and model-based agricultural decision
analysis. The IRI invests heavily in climate prediction science and forecast
development, and researches several crosscutting issues that are relevant to
agriculture and food security. The primary responsibilities of the position
are to participate in the design, coordination and implementation of
collaborative research and development. The work involves the development of
external collaborative relationships and capacity building among the
relevant research, development, farmer, policy and donor communities.
Qualifications include a Ph.D. in a relevant field of agriculture, and at
least two years of relevant experience following the Ph.D. Excellent written
and verbal English skills are essential, and skill in other relevant
languages is desirable. Understanding of development issues and experience
in applied research or development in a developing country are essential.
Broad training that includes both natural science and social dimensions of
agriculture, and demonstrated ability to work effectively on an
interdisciplinary team are highly desirable. Training in risk management and
experience in analyzing and using climate information to improve decision
making are also highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate the desire
and ability to develop innovative scientific solutions to practical
problems; and the ability to plan and execute collaborative projects. The
successful candidate will be required to travel and represent the IRI in
diverse settings around the world. The position is classified at the
Associate Research Scientist level, and is eligible for Columbia University
benefits. Please send a letter of application; a C.V. that includes an email
address and statement of research interests and career objectives; and names
addresses, and telephone numbers of three referees to: ARS/AG M. Mokhtari,
Human Resources Manager, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia
University, P O Box 1000, Palisades, NY 10964; or by e-mail in ASCII format
to: [log in to unmask] Screening will commence July 15,
2002. The IRI, as part of Columbia University acts affirmatively toward
equal employment opportunity. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
