Banjul,the Gambia

Sporadic reports reaching The Independent say an unspecified number of
Gambians caught by the terrorist attack at the World Trade Centre are now
feared dead.

More than one week after the attack rescue operations are continuing, with
little hope of finding any survivors, the last of which was rescued a day
after the attack.

Among those feared dead include one Alieu Khan said to have hailed from
Anglesea Street in Banjul. Another Gambian said to be a native of Kombo
Busurah is also feared dead after more than a week under the huge mound of
rubble that was the most famous landmark in New York. One Gambian identified
only as Sawaneh is also said to be missing since the attack. He is thought
by his family to have been in one of the buildings working at the time of
the attacks. He is said to be a native of Baddibu.

Baba Karamo Trerra whose family lives in Latrikunda Nyiringanya is also said
to be missing. Baba who has been working there for twelve years was said to
have been on the 97th floor of the second trade tower. His American wife
Sharon writing to Musa Leigh Karamo's most trusted friend said her husband
had called her to say he was trapped inside the building and that was the
last she had heard from him.

However, more than a week after both towers crumbled to the ground Sharon
and Musa remain hopeful that some miracle might happen. In one of the deluge
of email messages to Musa,Sharon had stated that her husband was strong and
capable of surviving the crisis.
