FROM THE MIMBER OF HOLY HARAM IN MAKKAH and MADINA
(Friday, February 18, 2000)

LADIES MUST ADHERE TO MODESTY, SEEK HELP THROUGH PATIENCE

The Imam of the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madina in their Friday sermon
advised Muslims to be pious and fear God, and seek His forgiveness, for this
is the only way to lead a blissful life free of anxiety and distress.

Sheikh Omar Bin Muhammad Al-Sebail, Imam of the Holy Haram in Makkah, in his
weekly sermon said, God Almighty has willed with His infinite wisdom to make
this life an abode of trail, grief and tribulation. No one lives in it in
everlasting happiness. If he is happy one day, the following days bring him
grief. But, the true believer's faith is reinforced by the ravages of time,
confident that Divine decree is inescapable, he said, advising patience and
forbearance in the face of hardship, for patience is the equipment of the
faithful and the key to success in life.

Elaborating on the virtues of patience, he said patience makes one to do
worships, perform obligation, refrain from disobedience and sins, and
induces satisfaction with God's will. He attributed the faithful's patience
in tribulation to their conviction about the good consequence at the end,
and that they would be richly recompensed in the hereafter for their
patience. He reminded Muslims of the variety of trial and tribulations that
had afflicted the Prophets (peace be upon them), and how they bore them with
patience and so won God's favor, He urged Muslims to be patient and never
despair from God's mercy, convinced that what has afflicted them would not
have skipped them, and what has skipped them would not have afflicted them.

In Madina, Sheikh Saleh Bin Hamad Al-Bedeir, Imam of the Prophet's Mosque,
called on Muslims to repent and seek forgiveness from God. He said Islam is
the religion of virtuous conduct and good attributes, and that modesty is
the peak of good conduct, for it prompts righteousness and piety. Every
religion has it own moral standard and Islam's moral standard is modesty,
and the sign of noble character is honesty and diffidence. He said modesty
brings happiness and goodness to society, and if it is lacking in a society,
corruption and misery set in.

Sheikh Al-Bedeir urged parents and teachers to emphasize modesty in
education and upbringing and said without modesty there can be no morals,
and it is the duty of Muslims to adhere to Islamic morals in every place.
Modesty prevents one from committing crimes and sins, deters him from
aggression and disobedience, and forces him to do good and justice, he
noted.

He urged women to maintain modest behavior because their beauty is in their
modesty and obeying God and His Prophet (peace be upon him). He warned them
against playing up their charms.

"Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which you laid upon those
before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability
to bear. And pardon us, and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are
our Protector, so give us victory over disbelieving people" (Al-Baqarah)
