>A LOOK AT OUR PLANET
>by: Abubakar N. Kasim Toronto, Canada
>
>It makes one's feelings very pessimistic after observing and analyzing
the
>situation of our planet.
>
>The past century has been the worst and bloodies century in the history
of
>human kind. It has been filled with wars, human starvation, incurable
and
>fatal diseases, natural disastrous such as earthquakes and hurricanes
and
>other devastations, which have been terrifying mankind.
>
>On its editorials and opinion page dated December 30, 1999, the Toronto
>Star stated, "more than 120 million people perished in world
wars,
>political persecution, genocide, or ideologically-engineered famine"
>
>Wars in Europe and Asia claimed the lives of approximately 10 million
from
>1914 and 55 million from 1939. Six million Jews were massacred in
the Nazi
>concentration camps. Lenin and Stalin executed or starved 30 million
or
>more
>including Ukrainians, as the paper also indicates.
>
>Also, Khmer Rouge of Cambodia massacred 2 million. Mao's China killed
30
>million. Hutu extremists killed 800, 000. Serb extremists claimed
250, 000
>lives in Bosnia.
>
>And last but not least, Russia is waging a brutal war against a million
>Chechens and the war is still boiling.
>
>As a war ends on one corner of the globe, a new one erupts somewhere
else.
>
>As Milosevic is washing his hands from the blood of innocent Kosovars,
>Yelsten and now Putin has started a new bloody war against Chechens
and no
>one knows how it will end. It doesn't seem that the world will ever
say a
>word to him especially after he and his predecessor claimed to be
crushing
>"extremists" and "terrorists".
>
>The Ozone layer, which protects our planet from the sun's harmful
>radiation, is under threat from the excessive use of chemicals. Scientists
>have already reported its depletion over Antarctica. If it is destroyed,
>then we will have to look for another planet that could sustain us
while
>there isn't one other than earth.
>
>The absence of democracy and true leadership in third world countries
has
>made it impossible for people to live there peacefully without fear
of
>government's aggression. Ruling parties never leave office unless
force is
>used to throw them out. Unfortunately, such force devastates the entire
>country most of the time. This is exactly what happened in Somalia
in early
>1991. If anyone utters a word or writes a phrase against the government
in
>these undemocratic societies, he/ she just disappears without a trace.
>
>On the other hand, the so-called first world countries
are also the
>architects of a strange phenomenon. Although there is a great advancement
>in technology in these parts of the world, but people have fallen
behind in
>morality and everything for them is "cool." Almost everyone in these
>societies is after material goods as if that was the key to happiness
in
>life.
>
>As parents age, they are thrown into senior's residence with flowers
sent
>to them occasionally and that is only if they are lucky enough to
be
>remembered.
>
>People in this region obviously have gone further in their style of
living.
>There is no limit in what is acceptable as human conduct and behavior.
>Everything is deemed acceptable.
>
>After the Canadian Supreme Court's recognition of same sex marriages
on May
>20, 1999, one should hopelessly ask what is next? Should marriage
between
>fathers and their daughters or sons to their mothers or someone who
falls
>in
>love to his dog be legalized then? If same-sex marriage is "cool"
why not
>all other forms?
>
>It is a part of reality to have problems in our lives. Expecting a
>universe, which is problem-free, is only a dream. It seems obvious,
>however, that we have gone way over the limit. We are out of control.
>
>Allah says "evil (sins and disobedience of Allah) has appeared on
land and
>see because of what the hands of men have earned (by oppression and
evil
>deeds) that Allah may make them taste a part of that which they have
done
>in
>order that they may return (by repenting to Allah and begging his
pardon)
>(The Glorious Quran 30: 41)
>
>There must be a source for the solution to humanity's problems. This
>solution lies in the final book revealed to Prophet Mohammed, peace
be upon
>him, about fourteen centuries ago.
>
>Many educators and scientists in the west have come to realize this
fact
>lately after studying Islam objectively.
>
>As a result, many people are coming to Islam and it is the fastest
growing
>religion in the world today.
>
>Dr. Keith Moore, a retired Professor of Anatomy and Chairman of the
Faculty
>of Medicine at the University of Toronto made a remarkable conclusion
about
>the Quran. He expressed his amazement of the scientific accuracy found
in
>the Qur'an in his article Highlights of Human Embryology in the Koran
and
>the Hadith published in 1982.
>
>He concluded that, is completely impossible for any human being to
author
>the Quran and it must have come from Heaven as a revelation from God.
>
>Another scientist, Dr. Maurice Bucaille of France, the author of The
Bible,
>The Quran and Science and What is the Origin of Man. He embraced Islam
>after studying it extensively. And many other open minded scholars
and
>scientists.
>
>George Bernard Shaw in his The Genuine Islam, Vol. 1, No. 81936 stated:
>
>I have always held the religion of Muhammad in high estimation because
of
>its wonderful vitality.
>
>- It is the only religion, which appears to me to possess that assimilating
>capacity to the changing phase of existence, which can make itself
appeal
>to every age.
>-
>- I have studied him?the wonderful man and in my opinion, far from
being
>anti?Christ, he must be called the saviour of humanity.
>-
>- I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship
of the
>modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that
would
>bring it the much needed peace and happiness;
>-
>- I have prophesied about the faith of Muhammad that it would be acceptable
>to the Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the
Europe
>of today.
>
